My Dad

My brothers and I are blessed with a father who is a devoted family man. All through our growing years and beyond, he has played the role of a family provider the best he could.

He has guided us in our studies and career choices. We are what we are today because he has always been ever ready for us at every corner we turned in our lives. He has always been on the lookout for what is best for us, he still does. Even to this day he still keeps his eyes open for opportunities to help us make our lives better and often makes suggestions on what we can do, like making certain investments, for instance.

If it had not been for my father, I might not have earned a university degree. The same went for my brothers. He recommended career paths, obtained application forms for us. Dad has involved himself directly with important study choices in our lives the best he could.

My father has been a regular church-goer all his life. He hardly ever misses Sunday mass. He is a God-fearing man. He also used to be blessed with a gift of healing some years back, whereby sick people he prayed over would often get well, especially babies and young children. It's truly amazing what God worked through him. I'm not sure if he still has this gift nowadays though.

My father is loving and caring towards his family. There are too many instances of this to mention in this one post but just let me tell of a few. He is very caring towards my mother. My mother is not very healthy and there was a time when she used to be in and out of hospital for the longest time. My father never stopped seeing to her needs and taking care of her. When my mother was referred to KL General Hospital from Sarawak for a major operation, there was no place to sleep and Dad had no choice but to sleep on the floor in the corridor where people walked by.

Another time more recent, he had to be outstation for some time and my mother was having a fever for some days but refused to see the doctor. My father called me and asked me to make a call to my Mum and try to convince her to go to the doctor.

My parents never really celebrate their wedding anniversaries much. But my father would often remember their anniversary, unlike my Mum.

Once when I went back to my hometown, I saw the end of the railing that was jutting out at the bottom of the stairs, that jutting-out part had been sawn off. I asked my mother what had happened to it. My mother laughed and said Dad had sawn it off because he was afraid his only grandchild would accidentally knock her head there while she was skipping about in the house. The railing just had to be sacrificed.

This morning I texted to wish my father a happy father's day. This was his reply:

And my response:
A Very Happy Father's Day, Dad.
I'm very proud of you.

To the Sprite in the Mirror

~~* Happy Birthday, Girl *~~

Birthday girl don’t fall so fast
Float down slowly, land softly on the grass
Blow out the flames and close your eyes
Yesterday is gone, tomorrow is in the skies

Make a special wish and it will come true
Far across the rainbow the sun will shine on through
Pick any star from as far as you can see
I promise it will be yours forever and free

When you sleep so peacefully late at night
Down the river of dreams smiling so bright
A million roses keep falling down
Snowing across your way and all around

Balloons of scarlet, blue and emerald green
Yellow, orange and white, lavender in between
A thousand colors float to the sky
Pink moondust of sixteen moons twinkle by

Snowdrops and lilies, hyacinths, daisies too,
Daffodils, stargazers, and tiny bells of blue
Candy breaths and mint in the perfumed air
Sweet is the garden in your dark brown hair

Birthday girl, don’t rush in at the bend
Turn the corner slowly, land as softly as you can
Bless you girl at every corner you turn
Wisdom walked this far with all that you’ve learned

Visit to a Children's Home

Went to a small orphanage called St. Jerome's with the students in the afternoon. There were 15 children there, who all happened to be Indian. The youngest was 3, the eldest 17. They were adorable.

The youngest and the oldest kids playing cards. The little girl is 3 while the older girl is 17. They'd been playing with sticker tattoos earlier so that's how that 'tattoo' got to her arm.

Grown in My Mother's Garden

I am a daughter. I have a mother who has inculcated in me many invaluable qualities by which to live. From her I have learned, among many others, the importance of family, about homemaking and how to be caring.

One of the things I treasure the most from my mother is the family meals. From the time my brothers and I were little, my family and I have always taken our meals together - breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. We still do mostly take our main meals together nowadays when we're all in the hometown, though some of us may skip breakfast or may come late to the table. When I was really young, I thought all families ate together. I believe one of the reasons my family has been close-knit and supportive of one another is because of much 'family togetherness', like our family meals.

Another thing I have learned a lot from my mother is 'how to keep house'. My mother loves clean, [truncated] a clean home. And because of her I like clean too. Though, I do tolerate dirt [truncated]. But I keep my room tidy (enough) because I'd feel unhappy if my immediate space is in a mess. Clean equals happy.

[truncated] I feel blessed to have had training from my mother. [truncated] Nowadays, she can't keep the house as clean as she'd prefer, as she's not as strong or as healthy as she used to be.

This is a collage I made this morning from 3 pictures - the lady, the flower and the watering can. The lady is my mum. The flower is me. And I'd grown from the showers of her love :)

As my mother isn't as strong or as young as she used to be, I try to minimise troubling her when I visit. [truncated] I recommend every child to help your parents out in any way you can when you visit them.

My mother is also a very caring woman. She takes extra good care of her family if any of us are unwell. From her I've learned to stand by my loved ones, particularly if ever any of us are sick. I remember very well how she has tucked us in when we had a fever or headache in our childhood and how she never left any of us alone at home overnight because she wanted to see to our meals, even when we were well into our teens. I think even when we'd turned into young adults. Back in the days when I once or twice took Malaysia Airlines 'standby flights' home or back here, she worried herself sleepless over my safety waiting all night for connecting flights at the airports.

Now that her children are all adults, she still continues to treat us in a similar way. Except nowadays, she doesn't ask me to help with the house chores, as I'm adult enough to think for myself what I should and shouldn't do. [truncated] She doesn't ask for help but I know she loves for us to help, or even better, take over doing the cooking, and instead she be the one helping. My mother doesn't particularly like cooking. But imagine all the years she has been doing it for us anyway! Let us lighten our mothers' burden when we're home.

There are many more wonderful things I have learned from my mother. To attempt to put everything down in writing would result in a book I think. But the basic lesson is love. My mother is filled with much love for her family. She wouldn't have done the things she did and is doing if she does not love us.

She doesn't know it, because I argue more than I should with her, but I do indeed feel blessed that she is my mother. I do love her and am grateful for all that she has done in my life. I am sorry I am not a better daughter to her.

My Personal Work History

My first job was working in an orange juice factory, but I got canned...couldn't concentrate.
*
Then I worked in the woods as a lumberjack, but I just couldn't hack it, so they gave me the ax.
*
After that I tried to be a tailor, but I just wasn't suited for it ...mainly because it was a so-so job.
*
Next I tried working in a muffler factory but that was too exhausting.
*
Then I tried to be a chef -- figured it would add a little spice to my life, but I just didn't have the thyme.
*
I attempted to be a deli worker, but any way I sliced it, I couldn't cut the mustard.
*
My best job was being a musician, but eventually I found I wasn't noteworthy.
*
I studied a long time to become a doctor, but I didn't have any patience.
*
Next was a job in a shoe factory; I tried but I just didn't fit in.
*
I became a professional fisherman, but discovered that I couldn't live on my net income.
*
I managed to get a good job working for a pool maintenance company, but the work was just too draining.
*
So then I got a job in a workout center, but they said I wasn't fit for the job.
*
After many years of trying to find steady work I finally got a job as a historian until I realized there was no future in it.
*
My last job was working at Starbucks, but I had to quit because it was always the same old grind.

HAPPY LABOUR DAY!

My Yard is a Wonderland

I have a mulberry tree in front of my house. There used to be 2 but I cut down one because the branches were getting into the neighbour's area. Lots of fruits at the end of March and early April. According to the lady who planted it - a tenant before us - mulberries are particularly good for the eyes.

The fruits attract the birds. So there are birds often in the tree and they'd chirp and sing in the mornings and evenings. It's really nice :)

All I have to do is stand under the canopy and pluck the berries. Most are within reach.

My latest "harvest" :)

Then there are other interesting yard vegetation in the compound :)
.
.
This plant with pretty berry-like fruits I found in the undergrowth. There was a white little butterfly flying around among the undergrowth too!

Look at this beauty. It's actually a tiny grass flower. Pic is larger than life. Love this picture :)

.

.

And look how glossy this leaf is. Who woulda guessed it's a plant growing wild eh? It's actually growing on the wall of the fence. Check out the roots on the wall.
.
.

Tiny grass flowers. Took a while to take this pic as I had to wait till the wind stopped blowing so the plant would stand still. It kept swaying in the wind :)

More grass flowers.

And more! These are so tiny, sweet, dainty.

A fern looking at joo.

Pandan. The plant is commonly grown in Malaysian backyards. The leaves are fragrant and used in cooking. They also make a good "natural air freshener" for cars and rooms. It is popular in Klang Valley. I use the leaves for my car too sometimes.

Stonebreaker. A common weed in Malaysian gardens. The stonebreaker is actually an herb with some great health benefits.

Sugar cane. Originally grown by the previous tenants. Love sugar cane juice but I would rather buy than drink juice from these. We don't think they're safe to consume.
.

I'm going to miss the nature feel of this place.
